Chadian Minister of Economy Mahamat Assouyouti Abakar met with Mali’s transitional president on Thursday to discuss the country’s bid. Chad also made a similar visit to Burkina Faso earlier this week.
The current Director General, Mohamed Moussa of Niger, reaches the end of his term this year. ASECNA has 19 member states, including 18 African nations and France.
Chad has put forth two candidates: Adoum Younousmi, formerly the Minister of Transport, and Mahamat Awaré Neissa, who led the National Civil Aviation Authority.
The selection process involves approval from the ministerial committee and the board of directors. The chosen candidate will serve a four-year term, renewable once.
The Director General needs aviation expertise, leadership skills, and extensive professional experience. Key responsibilities include implementing ASECNA’s business plan, managing finances and human resources, and approving contracts.
Mali and Burkina Faso’s stance on the issue remains unclear, especially considering past tensions regarding the G5 Sahel’s leadership. However, their collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts, with Chadian involvement in Mali, and their membership in the Alliance of Sahel States, could influence their decision.
ASECNA, established in 1959, plays a critical role in African air safety and navigation. The appointment of the new Director General is crucial for the organization’s future.
