Chad’s electoral commission on Thursday evening declared General Mahamat Deby as the winner of last Monday’s presidential election after polling 61.03 percent of the ballot or 3.7 million of the votes.
Deby who seized power shortly after the death of his predecessor and father Idriss Deby died while battling rebels at the warfront in 2021, led a three year transition programme to return the landlocked Sahelian nation to democratic rule.
The 40-year-old had nine other challengers including Prime Minister Succès Masra who was considered a frontrunner.
A handful of presidential aspirants were barred from taking part after the constitutional council claimed some of their documents were forged.
At least 8 million Chadians were registered to vote in an exercise critics of the transition criticised as a charade.
