Chad’s oldest opposition the ‘Federation Action pour la Republique/Parti Federation (FAR/PF) party, led by Ngarlejy Yorongar is heading for an implosion.
During the first extraordinary congress of the party, organised by rebels on February 11, 2023, the congressmen ejected Yorongar from the federal executive coordination, a position he has held for 28 years.
The delegates reproached him for his longevity at the head of the party and his poor organisation skills.
At the end of the congress, the former right-hand man of the opponent, Kemnodji Ngadjadoum Daniel, who had entered into conflict with his mentor, was appointed new federal executive coordinator by acclamation.
He had previously been suspended from the party by his mentor who accused him of creating unrest within it.
“Those who want to divide the party need only assume their responsibilities. Until then the party remains one and I remain and remain the only legitimate and legal coordinator of the party,” said Ngarlejy Yorongar, who described the meeting as a “non-event.”
According to him, the case is pending before the courts.
In January 2023, the former executive assistant to Ngarlejy Yorongar, Kemnodji Ngadjadoum Daniel had filed a petition with the High Court of Ndjamena to force the executive coordination of the party to organise an extraordinary congress.
He won his case because the court, in a summary order of January 9, enjoined the FAR/PF executive board to organise the congress.
Yorongar’s camp has appealed the decision.
FAR/PF is the party of Deby’s historic opponent, Ngarlejy Yorongar formed 28 years ago.
The party proved itself in the 1996, 2001 and 2006 elections.
Yorongar came second in the 2001 presidential election, but did not recognise the victory of the late Idriss Deby Itno, who died in April 2021 in an army counteroffensive against rebels of the ‘Front pour l’Alternance et la Concorde au Tchad’ (FACT) and was succeeded by his son, General Mahamat Idriss Deby.
In February 2008, during rebel attacks on Ndjamena, he was abducted along with another opponent, Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh, by regular forces.
In the last presidential elections in April 2021, he announced his candidacy before withdrawing from the race.
