Six days after the shooting death of opposition figure Yaya Dillo, the Chadian government says it is ready to cooperate with international investigators. Accused of being behind the attack on the head office of the National State Security Agency (ANSE) and of attempting to kill the president of the Supreme Court, Mr Dillo was riddled with bullets by members of the army at the headquarters of his party, the Socialist Party without Borders (PSF), which has since been razed to the ground by bulldozers. He died along with six other people, according to an
official report.
The current Prime Minister of Chad’s transitional government, Succes Masra, after offering his condolences to the family of his former opposition colleague, said that an “international enquiry” would be launched to “establish who was responsible.”
“The government is committed to conducting an international enquiry to establish who is responsible at all levels. There are photos, but there is a film, the film of the events. I would like to invite everyone to watch the film of all the events,” declared the President of the Transformateurs party, appointed to head the first government
of the 5th Republic, on RFI.
“For me, as head of government, this is one more area of turbulence, probably too many, during this transition phase. We went through one in October 2022, and we’ve just been through another. But as co-pilot, alongside the main pilot who is the President of the transition, my ambition with all the crew is that we should be able to land at the airport of democracy despite the turbulence,” Succes Masra added.
Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who is running for president on May 6 after serving as transitional president since the death of his father in April 2021, could face his prime minister in the race. “Nothing in the Constitution prevents me from being a presidential candidate if I so wish,” said Mr. Masra, whose return to Chad was facilitated by an
agreement with the authorities after he was the target of an arrest warrant following the deadly events of October 2022.
