The local authorities in Chad have apprehended five foreign nationals suspected of poaching.
According to the officials, the anti-poaching operation, spearheaded by Chad’s Ministry of Environment, has continued in the country’s eastern region.
The officials announced during a ceremony in Amdjarass, the capital of Ennedi East province, that the five suspects were caught with gazelle carcasses and military-grade weapons and that some vehicles, registered in Libya, were also seized.
The authorities also confirmed that the suspects had been handed over to the judicial authorities for prosecution under the Chadian laws.
Meanwhile, General Bokhit Ali Diar, Director General of the Forestry and Wildlife Guard, has called on the public to cooperate with wildlife officers to identify and apprehend those responsible for environmental destruction.
In a Facebook post, the Ministry of Environment reiterated its resolve to combat any threats to the nation’s fauna and flora.
The operation, launched in January 2025, follows a surge in poaching incidents in Zakouma National Park and the Barh Aouk Reserves, where 10 giraffes were killed—an act that deeply shocked the environmental protection groups.
In early February, an interim report from the operation showed that 13 suspected poachers were arrested and about 30 weapons confiscated, according to Environment Minister, Hassan Bakhit Djamous.
