Signed on February 7, 2024, the agreement guaranteed Lazina’s safety upon his return to Chad. However, the MNCT claims that the government has withdrawn the security forces assigned to protect him.
The party’s vice-president, Gougouma Marc Maina, stated that this withdrawal constitutes a clear violation of the agreement and puts Lazina’s life at risk. Maina emphasized that the security forces were removed while Lazina was still outside the country.
The MNCT is urging President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to reinstate the security detail for Lazina. The opposition leader, once an ally of the transition, had previously served as Minister of the Environment and Minister of Youth before leaving the country due to security concerns in early 2023. The Kinshasa II Agreement allowed for his return to Chad.
