Chad’s president Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has assessed efforts to end his country’s internal isolation.
He chaired a meeting on Wednesday to monitor and evaluate road infrastructure projects at the Toumai presidential palace.
According to a press release from the presidency, this meeting is part of the head of state’s monitoring of the implementation of his political program, which gives priority to the development of transport infrastructure.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Opening Up, Aziz Mahamat Saleh, and the Secretary of State for Road Maintenance, Haoua Amadaye Abdelkérim Bakhit were present at this meeting.
According to information provided by the presidency, the Chadian leader took stock of the progress of the main road projects across the country. In 2024, the budget of the Ministry of Infrastructure amounted to 198 billion CFA francs.
Currently, 1,002 km of roads are being paved, while an additional 5,586 km are planned over the next five years.
In addition, 25,000 km of roads and rural tracks have been completed, including 1,340 km
already completed in certain regions.
President Deby gave instructions to accelerate certain priority projects, such as the construction of the northern access road to the capital Ndjamena.
He also requested a study on the construction of a bank on the Chari and Logone rivers to prevent flooding.
According to the press release, the Chadian president reiterated that he would not tolerate any evasion or poor workmanship in the execution of the work, which would be subject to sanctions.
