APA-Ndjamena (Chad) Tensions between Ndjamena and Yaounde over the former’s oil have eased paving the way for the return of Cameroon’s ambassador to Chad.
After a month and a half of a diplomatic rupture, the two neighbours are moving towards normalising relations.
On 7 June, N’Djamena authorised its ambassador Djidda Moussa Outhman to return to his post in Yaoundé.
He had been recalled for consultations on 24 April 2023.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Adam Mahamat, justified this resumption of relations by the defusing of tensions between the two countries.
He said the missions to Chad by Cameroon’s Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, and to Cameroon by his Chadian counterpart, Dr Gali Ngothé Gatta, had helped to bring common understanding on major issues of past misunderstandings.
On 20 April, N’Djamena recalled its ambassador in Yaoundé following the signing of an agreement under which a subsidiary of Savannah Energy would sell a 10 percent stake in the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company (COTCO) to the National Hydrocarbons Company (SNH).
Chad has decided to nationalise Esso Chad’s assets and rights of all kinds and refused to allow Savannah Energy to buy these shares.
