APA-Ndjamena (Chad) The strike will begin on 3 November and end on 9 November.
The various education sector unions are demanding payment of suspended salaries, the financial effects of the austerity measures taken in 2016 and travel expenses.
After issuing strike warnings, the education sector unions have moved up a gear.
At a general meeting on 2 November, the national executive of the Chad Teachers’ Union (SET) decided on a one-week warning strike. The union is demanding payment of salary arrears, the financial effects of the austerity measures taken in 2016 and travel expenses.
“The Chadian school system cannot be rebuilt without teachers. To this end, we are calling for our demands to be honoured,” says Mbairis Ngartoide Blaise, Secretary General of the SET.
In a press release, the ‘Plateforme and the Collectif des Syndicats du Secteur de l’Education’ also called on teachers and Ministry of Education staff to observe a one-week dry strike, renewable. This network of unions is demanding “immediate” payment of suspended or reduced salaries for the month of October. More than 7,000 civil servants from all ministries are affected by this salary suspension. The government has given as the reason the irregularity of their files with the Pay Office.
