APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – The distribution of electricity in the Chadian capital will be interrupted from April 25 to 30.
N’Djamena is facing load shedding after the National Electricity Company (SNE) announced that electricity supply will be interrupted from April 25 to 30. This is due to ongoing maintenance work on the installations of the National Refinery Company (SRN), in particular the water circulation and other supply systems.
This mini-refinery is an important SNE partner in the production and transportation of electricity.
Several areas of N’Djamena were effectively plunged into darkness following the announcement. Production will resume as soon as the work is completed, the statement said.
N’Djamena is regularly plunged into darkness due to untimely power cuts. The SNE, the only company that produces and distributes electricity, does not seem to have the capacity to meet demands.
To supply the part of the city covered by the distribution network, 120 MW are needed. However, SNE’s capacity is 90 MW. But of these 90 MW, the fuel supply only allows the start-up of 70 MW, said the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Djerassem Le Bemadjiel.
To address this electricity crisis, the government has launched several projects to build solar power plants. The one in Mongo, in the centre of the country, is already operational.
In Moundou, the economic capital, a gas-fired power plant supplies the city with electricity. Other projects are under way in the city of N’Djamena and in some central provinces.
