APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – Since the bloody demonstrations of October 20, 2022, no other demonstration has been organised or authorised.
In two decrees, the Minister of Public Security, Mahamat Charfadine Margui, has banned two political demonstrations scheduled for Friday 14 July 2023.
The first was organised by the Rally for Justice and Equality (RAJET) party. The second is a meeting planned for the same day by the Democratic Party for Change (PDR).
The reasons given by the Ministry of Public Security were the absence of copies of the decrees authorising these parties to operate, the failure to provide the address of the organiser of the march and the failure to meet the deadline for registration.
Peaceful demonstrations have been allowed since the transitional government took power in N’Djamena in April 2021, following the death of President Idriss Déby Itno in an army counter-offensive against rebels from the Front for Change and Concord in Chad. However, organisers must first meet certain conditions. They must submit a request containing details of the organisation, the route and the reasons for the demonstration. The application must be submitted at least five days before the planned date of the demonstration.
Following the bloody demonstrations of 20 October 2022, in which around a hundred people were killed, the government suspended demonstration permits. No demonstrations have been organised or authorised since then.
