Chad’s transitional leader, Mahamat Idriss Deby and his Prime Minister, Albert Pahimi Padacke, on Sunday, May 2, co-signed the decree appointing the members of the country’s transitional government.
Two weeks after the death of President Idriss Deby Itno, the Transitional Military Council (CMT) appointed a transitional government through a decree read on state television, by army spokesman, General Azem Bermandoa Agouna.
This government comprising 32 ministers and ten deputy ministers is marked by the arrival of two members of the National Union for Development and Renewal (UNDR), a party led by Saleh Kebzabo, the main opponent of the late president. These new members are Abderahim Awat Atteib appointed to the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Productions and Rachelle Oualmi Bairra, the Assistant Government Permanent Secretary. Kebzabo who boycotted the last presidential election, now recognizes “the authority of the Military Council.”
Another fierce opponent of Deby’s regime, Mahamat Amah Alhabo, the leader of the Party for Freedoms and Development, is appointed Minister of Justice.
The new portfolio of National Reconciliation and Dialogue is entrusted to Acheikh Ibn Oumar, a former rebel leader who in 2019 became diplomatic adviser to the presidency. Several former ministers of Idriss Deby’s last government have been reappointed or appointed to other ministries.
Through these appointments, the ruling junta is sending a strong signal, as it had promised a “government of national reconciliation,” after the appointment of Albert Pahimi Padacke as Prime Minister on April 26.
This new team will have to lead an 18-month transition, ending with the holding of “free and democratic elections” as stated by the CMT, which was set up in the wake of Idriss Deby’s death on the warfront on April 19
