Convicted Polish assassin Janusz Walus will remain in South Africa to serve his parole for the murder of anti-apartheid stalwart Chris Hani when he is released from prison on Thursday, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has announced.
Walus, who killed the South African Communist Party leader outside his Johannesburg home in 1993, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
But in a landmark decision last week the country ‘s Constitutional Court ordered his release, saying his continued incarceration was “irrational” after he was denied freedom by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Ramola in 2020.
The court’s decision prompted Motsoaledi to grant the convict permanent residence until the end of his parole, but with conditions to be imposed by Lamola.
Lamola said the exemption contained a condition that Walus might not use any travel document and/or passport issued by the Polish embassy in Pretoria to leave South Africa without the knowledge of the authorities.
According to the statement on Monday, a letter addressed to Walus and a certificate of exemption have been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services to be delivered to Polish convict.
