The report by Nigeria’s Channels Television said that 24 victims, mostly children had been rescued from the rubbles of the three-story building by the combined efforts of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the police, army and the Red Cross.
The report said that the children were pupils of a primary school located on the top floor of the building.
According to the report, the building, situated at Massey Street in the Ita Faji area of Lagos Island, was one of those which had since been marked by the Federal Government for demolition in the densely populated area.
The building was said to have caved in at about 9:45 am on Wednesday, raising fears for the lives of the tenants and the school children. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Red Cross (NRC) has appealed for blood donations for the victims of the collapsed building.
The Secretary of NRC, Lagos, Mr. Olakunle Lasisi, who made the appeal on Thursday in Lagos, said that the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service on Wednesday, launched the appeal for blood,
“It was launched by the MD of the General Hospital, so they can have enough blood in the bank to assist the casualties of the collapsed building.
“When an incident like this happens, blood donations is always required to meet the demand of those in need of blood transfusion.
“It is a good opportunity for the blood bank to replenish because there are people who want to assist,” another local media report quoted Lasisi as saying.
