Two days after the death of his main opponent, Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas, Congo’s outgoing president is declared the winner of the country’s presidential election, according to the provisional results announced by the Electoral Commission.
The victory of Denis Sassou Nguesso, nicknamed “The Emperor,” comes as no unsurprised. He is elected for a 5th five-year term as president of the Congo. Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas, who died last Sunday in Paris, France, after he tested positive for Covid-19, comes second with 7.84 percent of the valid votes cast.

According to the Minister of Interior, the leader of the ruling Congolese Labor Party (PCT) largely dominated his opponents in almost all of the country’s 108 sub-prefectures, losing only in Kinkala and Louingui in the Pool region and in the district of Makelekele in Brazzaville, the nation’s capital.
The voter turnout for the March 21 presidential election is estimated at 67.55 percent.
