The Ivorian government seeks, through this initiative, to further fight against climate change and to adopt best practices in sustainable land management.
The Council of Ministers adopted on Wednesday a communication on the country’s agreeing to join the Convention establishing the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall, said the Ivorian government spokesman, Mr. Amadou Coulibaly said.
This convention, initiated by the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) and supported by the African Union (AU), aims to curb the advance of the desert and transform the degraded landscapes of the Sahel-Saharan region.
The “Great Green Wall” stretches across the width of Africa, from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east of the continent. It also provides for the creation of a green belt of 100 million hectares through reforestation.
The project is expected to facilitate the sequestration of 250 million tons of carbon and the creation of ten million jobs in rural areas.
