With a view to supporting the dynamics of the rubber sector, the Ivorian government is working with stakeholders in the sector to remove all constraints in order to improve its competitiveness.
As the leading rubber producing country in Africa and 4th in the world, Cote d’Ivoire is a major producer of natural rubber. Between 2018 and 2020, production has continued to grow, from nearly 602,000 tons to 955,570 tons of dry rubber equivalent.
To boost the agricultural sectors, the Ivorian government has initiated the Competitive Value Chains for Employment and Economic Transformation Project (PCCET). The project has conducted an extended field mission with sector stakeholders in the regions of Agneby Tiassa, Me, Indenie Djuablin, Tonkpi, Cavally, Loh-Djiboua, Nawa and San-Pedro.
The results of this fact-finding mission, conducted as part of a public-private dialogue between July 1 and August 19, 2022, will be presented at a workshop on October 11 and 12, 2022 in San-Pedro, in the southwest of the country.
Mr. Arthur Coulibaly, coordinator of the PCCET, and his teams will analyze the major constraints of the rubber value chain in a participatory manner in order to establish an action matrix for its competitiveness.
Participants will also analyze the root causes associated with the major constraints identified, propose operational solutions and the action plan for the implementation of these solutions.
At the national level, the rubber sector provides nearly 330,000 direct jobs. In addition, rubber production is characterized by the presence of more than 27 factories with a combined nominal processing capacity of approximately 853,000 tons of dry rubber per year.
The Competitive Value Chains for Employment and Economic Transformation Project is a World Bank-funded project implemented by a Coordination Unit attached to the Prime Minister’s Office.
It aims to improve access to finance and competitiveness of the rubber, oil palm, pineapple, mango and shea, as well as plastic and textile/clothing value chains for the marketing of high value added products.
