South Africa has recorded over 6,300 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 3,776,298 since the pandemic broke out in March 2020, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has announced.
According to NICD data on Wednesday, the increase of 6,372 represented a 21.1 percent positivity rate and the highest since the country declared the end of the National State of Disaster for the disease some weeks ago.
“The proportion of positive new cases tested Wednesday is 21.1 percent, and is higher than Tuesday’s of 18.4 percent. The seven-day average was 18 percent on Wednesday, and is higher than Tuesday’s at 16.9 percent,” the agency said.
Gauteng province the highest number of new cases at 49 percent, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 23 percent, it added.
The Western Cape province accounted for 14 percent, followed by Free State and Eastern Cape each of which accounted for four percent of total daily cases.
The Ministry of Health reported three deaths that occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the total fatalities to 100,351 to date.
There was an increase of 62 admissions at hospital nationwide, the ministry said, adding that the cumulative number of recoveries stood at 3,638,087.
