A former Interior minister in The Gambia has said he is going under self-isolation over fears of contracting the coronavirus after returning to the country recently, APA can report on Wednesday.
“Going into quarantine is for my protection and the protection of the public. The community will be fully assured. This is the responsible thing to do. I have consented to subject myself to close supervision by the health authorities during the period” writes.Mai Ahmed Fatty on his Facebook page on Wednesday.
Fatty who heads The Gambia Moral Congress party said like all new arrivals to the country should do, he was complying with public health safety regulations and would cooperate with personnel of the Department of Health while he is under quarantine.
“During this critical period, I shall be with all of you in spirit, and together, we shall emerge stronger, wiser and smarter out of this pandemic” he adds.
The Gambia’s land, sea and air remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic which has killed over 200, 000 people worldwide since it first emerged in Wuhan, China last December.
The politician says despite the closure of the country’s borders, “the right to return home for a Gambian citizen cannot be vitiated by any law, meaning the borders can legally be closed for entry to only non Gambians”.
At ten, The Gambia has one of the world’s lowest number of Covid-10 cases, with one death and eight recoveries since March.
