South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll breached the 90,000-mark on Tuesday after some 27 people succumbed to the virus, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has announced.
The new death toll of 90,002 coincided with a new daily case record of 13,147 infections, NICD said.
Gauteng province remained the country’s epicenter, with 8,445 new infections reported, the institute said.
This was followed by KwaZulu-Natal (1,396), Western Cape (805) and North West (720), it added.
The cumulative total infections in South Africa were 3,051,222 as of Tuesday, NICD said, adding that the country now boasts of more than 14.9 million fully vaccinated adults.
