Gabon’s acting president was received Monday in Dakar by his Senegalese counterpart, as part of an official visit marked by a shared desire to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
After attending the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre on Sunday, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema paid an official visit to the Senegalese capital the following day. During their talks, the two leaders agreed to give new impetus to their cooperation, which already covers several key sectors.
“The legal framework for our cooperation is rich and covers a wide range of areas: politics, the military, education, vocational training, culture, youth, sports and the economy. We have agreed with President Nguema to take our partnership to a higher level,” said President Faye at a joint press conference as he left an audience with his counterpart at the Palace of the Republic.
Ministers from both delegations were tasked with exploring new opportunities to intensify economic and commercial exchanges. This dynamic is part of a shared desire to deepen the exchange of experiences in areas of common interest, such as security and economic development.
The Gabonese leader welcomed this enhanced cooperation and thanked Senegal and President Faye “for the various signs of attention” he and his delegation had received since their arrival in Dakar. Emphasising the importance of this bilateral relationship, Oligui Nguema invited his Senegalese counterpart to visit Gabon in the near future: “I would like to publicly express my interest in seeing you as soon as possible on the African soil of Gabon.”
President Faye also thanked his counterpart for the welcome and integration of Senegalese who have been living in Gabon “for several generations,” before congratulating him on the “plebiscite” of the referendum he organized on October 16, 2024, which allowed the Central African country to adopt a new constitution.
“This is an important step in the process of restoring our institutions. The next step is the drafting of the electoral code and the electoral register to lead us to a free, transparent and peaceful election that will mark the end of the transition. All Senegalese observers, wherever they may be, are welcome to participate in these stages,” said General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who took power in August 2023 after a coup that overthrew President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
