Delegates, representing football federations and confederations from across the globe are arriving in the Rwandan capital city Kigali to attend the much-anticipated 73rd FIFA Congress slated for March 16, APA reported here Monday.
The most awaited item on the agenda of the Congress in Kigali is the elections of the FIFA president who will be taking office during the next four years. Incumbent Gianni Infantino will stand for a third-term unchallenged during the elections.
A candidate is eligible for three terms and, if elected, Infantino will be serving his last term in office.
The 52-year-old Italian-Swiss lawyer was first elected in 2016 following the corruption scandal which brought down predecessor Sepp Blatter and was re-elected in 2019.
He has previously worked as the president of European confederation UEFA.
This will be the second time that the annual congress of the international football body takes place in Africa after South Africa hosted it in 2007.
Rwanda also hosted FIFA Council meeting in October 2018.
During the meeting, representatives of up to 211 FIFA members will vote for the world football governing body’s next president, with the incumbent Gianni Infantino the only candidate to announce his bid so far.
