The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, August 26, 2024, announced the closure of its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso.
“Due to the military coups that have severely limited our ability to act in the Sahel region, the embassies in Burkina Faso and Mali will be closed,” the Danish Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press statement.
It explained that “the conditions for constructive bilateral cooperation are no longer met” as the countries are ruled by military regimes.
Mali and Burkina Faso will be covered by Copenhagen and a new special representative for the Sahel and Great Lakes region, the statement said,
It promised that support for the populations of these countries will be maintained through humanitarian aid and a continued commitment to development.
It added that Denmark will also open new embassies in Senegal, Rwanda and Tunisia in 2025 “as part of Denmark’s new strategy of engagement with African countries.”
