Duma Boko was sworn in as Botswana’s sixth president during an inauguration ceremony held on Friday at the National Stadium in Gaborone.
The event was attended by former presidents and regional leaders, marking a significant moment in the nation’s political history.
Boko’s election followed the general elections on October 30 where his Umbrella for Democratic Change party defeated the Botswana Democratic Party, led by outgoing president Mokgweetsi Masisi, which has been in power since the country’s independence in 1966.
In his inaugural address, Boko expressed gratitude to Masisi for facilitating a smooth transition of power.
He emphasised the importance of change and urged Batswana to embrace it, calling for a spirit of peaceful coexistence among all citizens.
“Dare to dream,” he encouraged the thousands gathered for the ceremony.
The inauguration was graced by notable figures, including former presidents Festus Mogae, Ian Khama and the outgoing Masisi.
Regional leaders in attendance included Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Opposition leaders from South Africa and Zimbabwe also graced in the ceremony, including Julius Malema who was previously banned by the Masisi administration from entering Botswana.
