Several minor quakes have been felt in parts of the Rwandan capital Kigali in the early hours of Monday.
It comes two days after the eruption of Nyiragongo volcano in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo reached the suburbs of Goma.
Since Saturday evening, about 3,500 people have crossed the border with Rwanda as lava approaches the outskirts of the city of Goma in eastern DR Congo, according to an official from the Rwanda Red Cross.
“People have started to return back to their homes and the situation has improved at the moment” Flavien Nshimiyimana, the coordinator of the Rwanda Red Cross in Western province near the border with DRC told APA.
Nyiragongo (3,470 m) is located about 20 Km from Goma, the busiest capital of North Kivu.
The last major eruption occured in January 2002 in the same area, killing 245 people.
In the meanwhile, the fleeing citizens said that the lava’s itinerary was so far in the inhabited areas rather than residential areas.
Taking to Twitter, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Kinshasa, Vincent Karega was thankful that back home, Congolese citizens have been well received.
“Rwandan borders are open and the reception of our neighbors is flowing peacefully. There was no hindrance whatsoever, rather the organization is encouraging” Karega said.
