The 57th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) opened on Monday in Niamey where several Heads of State of the sub-region,
The ECOWAS head of states including Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire were welcomed, on Sunday, by the Chairman of the ECOWAS Assembly of Heads of State and Government, Niger’s Mahamadou Issoufou.
The summit is the first to physically bring together the heads of state and government of the sub-regional organisation since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
ECOWAS Heads of State and Government will take stock of the political, security and economic situation in the sub-region, the Ivorian presidency said in a statement.
Within this framework, they will examine reports on the state of the Community, the regional security action plan, the ECOWAS monetary cooperation programme and the Covid-19situation.
The ECOWAS Assembly of Heads of State and Government will furthermore elect a new president.
