The extraordinary meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will be held on May 5-6 in Accra, Ghana.
Faced with threats of all kinds, the sub-regional organization is making the security of its 15-member countries a major issue. Thus, military officers will take part, in the Ghanaian capital, in a two-day meeting to discuss these issues. They intend to fulfill their role as this Committee is an institutional body of ECOWAS responsible for the prevention and management of conflicts in the region.
During their meeting, the senior officers will discuss priorities for operational and logistical support, and the modalities for allocating these capacities to the States concerned, a statement received by APA explains. On this occasion, they will also discuss the implementation of the recommendations of their 41st session held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, from 17 to 19 November 2021.
This meeting was devoted to the analysis of the regional security situation due to terrorist attacks and the increase in illegal acts at sea. A number of recommendations were made including the operational strengthening of the forces of the frontline countries against terrorism through training and acquisition of specific equipment and financial support for the planning and conduct of joint operations along the borders of these countries, recalls the same source.
For this last action, Ecowas explains that it is a financial support of its Commission in the organization of the joint operation between Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Togo.
