The West African regional grouping strongly rejects allegations of backing terrorism against its member
states, particularly Nigeria, and underlines the latter’s stabilising role in the fight against the scourge through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) on Thursday expressed “profound sadness” at the accusations made against Nigeria and other member states, categorically refuting any involvement in sponsoring terrorism.
In a statement seen by APA, the regional organization particularly recalls Nigeria’s stabilizing role in the region.
“The recent successes recorded by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), led by Nigeria, demonstrate the country’s commitment to peace and security throughout the region,” the statement said.
In addition, Ecowas highlighted Nigeria’s historical contribution to peace and security, not only in West Africa but across the African continent. The organisation refuted “any suggestion that such a generous and magnanimous country would become a state sponsor of terrorism.”
In a call for appeasement, the Ecowas commission urged “all states in the region to promote dialogue and stability and to refrain from making accusations that are not supported by evidence.”
On Wednesday, in an interview with Tele Sahel, General Tiani, head of the military junta in Niger since the coup of July 26, 2023, accused Nigeria of colluding with former colonial power France to destabilise his country.
Nigeria, in a statement from the government spokesperson, rejected the allegation as unfounded.
