APA-Dakar (Senegal) – Several countries in the region are facing the threat of terrorism.
The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, stressed on Tuesday the importance of unity among member states to ensure stability and harmonious development in the region.
During the celebration of the 49th anniversary of the regional institution, Mr Touray declared on the X social network: “It is in unity that we will succeed in preserving peace and strengthening the security of our member states and our peoples.”
He warned that unity is under threat and that it is crucial to preserve it in order to continue to fight insecurity effectively.
Mr. Touray also praised the achievements of ECOWAS, such as the free movement of people, intra-community trade and transport infrastructure, while highlighting the current security challenges particularly in the fight against terrorism.
Some member countries are facing attacks by jihadist groups in their northern regions.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which announced their withdrawal from the organisation last January, have been
under attack for several years.
