The mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) in the Malian crisis, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, is carrying a message from the heads of state of the sub-regional organization to the junta in Bamako.
According to a statement from the Ecowas Commission, the purpose of this mission is to “find a date and a consensual timetable for the elections and the rest of the transition.”
Goodluck Jonathan will try to “find a compromise with the Malian authorities on a roadmap for ending the crisis. Meanwhile, the country is still under an embargo by Ecowas since January 2022.
The sanctions imposed by the regional organization follow the transition period of up to five years voted unanimously by the National Transitional Council (CNT) on February 21, 2022. The new document is the result of the recommendations of the National Conference on Reforms held from 27 to 30 December 2021.
The new document, which serves as a fundamental act, stipulates that as president of the transition, Colonel Assimi Goita will not be able to run in the next presidential and legislative elections. An amnesty is also voted for the perpetrators of the last two coups.
In this new charter, the position of vice-president of the transition was abolished. The number of appointed and non-elected parliamentarians increased from 121 to 147 for the transition period.
