The ECOWAS Parliament has adopted the draft Rules of Procedure of the sixth Legislature. The adoption followed the conclusion of debate and amendment of the report of the ad hoc committee of the Parliament on Wednesday in Kano in northern Nigeria.
The first Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, who addressed the session on Wednesday said that the adoption of the Strategic Plan (2024 – 2028) of the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament would guide the programmes and activities of the Parliament.
He noted that the strategic plan is a framework for guiding the Parliamentarians on the programmes and activities of the Parliament for the current legislative tenor.
According to Senator Barau, the strategic plan is a road map that serves as the beacon to guide the Parliament in its efforts at realising a more prosperous, peaceful and inclusive West Africa.
The Draft Annual Work Plan, he said, would also serve as a guideline for effective service delivery.
He listed the priorities of the ECOWAS Parliament as enhancing peace and stability, ensuring economic integration and social inclusion among others.
In his remarks on the adoption of the document, the Secretary General of the ECOWAS Parliament, Mr Bertin Some, said that the Strategic Plan of the sixth Legislature covered all the thematic areas and that it was subject to review “when the need arises”.
He assured that the Parliament would contribute immensely towards the realisation of its objectives despite the various challenges confronting the region.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among members in order to achieve the aims and objectives of the regional body.
