The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the terrorist attacks that struck the Faladie gendarmerie school on the outskirts of Bamako and Senou international airport on Tuesday 17 September 2024.
“These acts of violence, which threaten the peace and security of the people of West Africa, are strongly condemned,” said the regional institution.
The assaults, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), resulted in several casualties, including among the gendarmerie students. The General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces (EMGA) hailed the response of its forces.
Following the attacks, access to the airport was temporarily restricted, before the Malian authorities lifted the security measures in the afternoon.
Ecowas reaffirmed its full commitment to supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in the sub-region, while reiterating its resolute opposition to all forms of terrorism.
This latest attack adds to a series of acts of violence that continue to destabilise Mali, a country that has already been marked by armed conflict and security threats for several years.
