APA-Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt) The annual meetings are held under the theme “Mobilising private sector financing for climate and green growth in Africa.”
The 58th Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group started on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, under the theme “Mobilizing private sector financing for climate and green growth in Africa.”
The opening ceremony was attended by President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the president of Comoros and Chairman of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani, Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe and the Vice President of Tanzania, Philip Isdor Mpango.
AfDB Group Governors are meeting to consider how to more robustly mobilise the private investment Africa needs to meet its urgent climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives.
The overall theme of this year’s event reflects the growing urgency expressed by African leaders for a marked acceleration of efforts to limit temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. This is an imperative to protect the most vulnerable countries, particularly those on the African continent.
The governors, representing the 54 African countries and 27 non-regional members of the institution, will have a high-level dialogue with AfDB chief Mr. Akinwumi Adesina and his team.
The Annual Meetings constitute the AfDB’s most important event, bringing together about 3,000 delegates and participants each year.
They allow the institution to review progress with its shareholders and provide a unique forum for exchange on key issues affecting Africa’s development for representatives of governments, business, CSOs, think tanks, academia and the media.
