Rescue workers on Monday continued a search for survivors following Sunday’s gravel mine collapse in Zambia’s Chongwe district.
Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said eight bodies had been retrieved as of Sunday.
“Our rescue teams have been working tirelessly to recover those affected by this incident. However, due to the challenging conditions at the site, the rescue operation has been temporarily suspended for the day,” he said in a statement.
A truck, which was being loaded, is said to have been completely buried after the mine collapsed.
The exact number of those still trapped remains unknown.
Hamoonga said the truck driver, who was rescued after being buried under the sand, informed the police that there were no less than nine people at the scene.
