Eight people have died after their small boat capsized in Ethiopia’s southern region, Police have said.
The regional police on Sunday disclosed that a boat which was heading from Amaro Special Force to Arbaminch city, capsized in Lake Chamo, killing all eight passengers on board.
“The boat was carrying people and cargo when it sailed from Alfacho locality towards Arba Minch city before it capsized,” Taju Negash, Media department head of the regional police, said.
He stated a lake wave on Saturday caused the boat, which was also overloaded with bananas, to capsize, leaving passengers dead. The banana is estimated to weigh more than 60 quintals.
The lake wave has so far disrupted efforts to retrieve the bodies of the eight deceased.
So far, none of the bodies of the victims has been recovered, but their shoes and clothes, police said.
