APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the British charge d’affaires in Asmara, Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister for Information announced on Monday on his X page (formerly Twitter).
Gebremeskel said the ministry’s decision came in connection with “continued and false accusations against Eritrea” on matters related to alleged territorial occupation.
This is the second time Eritrea has summoned a British diplomat in less than a year.
Eritrea’s Director of General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2023 summoned British Charge d’Affaires in Asmara over remarks by Darren Welch, the British Ambassador to Ethiopia made during a visit to Mekelle.
The British charge d’affaires was accused of having endorsed the Tigray People’s Liberation Front occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories.
Eritrea was involved during the two-year conflict between federal forces and TPLF rebels after a rocket allegedly fired by renegade troops hit the capital Asmara.
The TPLF has been accusing Eritrea of “occupying territories in the Tigray region.
Eritrea denies this and sees TPLF’s position as an irredentist claim.
