Eritrea on Wednesday announced that it will suspend the Ethiopian Airlines flights to and from the country by the end of September.
The airlines said it received a letter stating that Ethiopian Airlines Flights destined for Eritrea shall be suspended with effect from September 20, 2024.”
It is signed by Paulos Kahsay, Director General, state of Eritrea Ministry of Transport, Communication and Civil Aviation.
In a statement addressed to travellers to Eritrea, the government in Asmara said ”All Ethiopian Airlines travellers destined to the state of Eritrea are hereby advised to adjust their flights and subsequently look for other options as appropriate.”
Ethiopian Airlines has officially confirmed to the public that it has received a notice from the Eritrean government’s civil aviation authority.
In a brief update addressed to passengers, it said “Ethiopian Airlines has received a notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority through a letter dated 21 July 2024 indicating the suspension of all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea, effective September 30, 2024. The specific reasons for this suspension have not been disclosed to us.”
It also noted that it is seeking clarification from the Eritrean government while expressing commitment to “resolving any issues amicably and promptly.”
Ethiopian Airlines resumed flights to Eritrea in 2018 after the two countries ended, then, hostile relations.
Relations between the two countries have been deteriorating again at least for the past two years.
