The 18-year-old mother, Nondumiso Mndzebele had the baby boy delivered
through Caesarean Section on Tuesday after doctors at Hlathikulu Government Hospital realised that the newborn was too big.
According to the Children’s Hospital, high birthweight may be related to the amount of weight a mother gains during pregnancy and excessive weight gain can translate to increased fetal weight.
Parents of the teenager have since sent an appeal to members of the public to donate clothes for the baby as they claim that all the clothes contained in the layette did not fit due to its size.
“She may also need assistance with money to purchase milk formula because she may not be able to produce enough breast milk to satisfy the baby’s appetite,” a nurse suggested.
The teenager named the baby boy Thabiso which means joy.
