Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in a statement on Thursday said parties in the Russia-Ukraine war need to exercise maximum restraint to end the crisis peacefully.
He said his government is closely following the developments in Europe with great caution.
According to him, the global community’s tragic historical past coupled with the vast leaps and advancements countries have made in the 21st century beckon a more nuanced approach in international relations and diplomacy.
“A zero-sum situation need not be our reality, especially when we can rely on the lessons of the past to draw us to greater heights of coexistence,” he said.
Ahmed said the global communities have passed through two difficult years of economic and health hardships due to COVID-19 pandemic and called for returning the lives of the world’s community to normalcy.
“Whether it is a health pandemic or an armed confrontation, it is these vulnerable sections of the world community that suffer the most,” the Premier said.
According to the Prime Minister, Ethiopia has abundant lessons to share on the devastating effects of war, citing his government’s engagement in war in the northern part of the country.
“Our experience has shown the devastating consequence that war inflicts upon families, communities, livelihoods and the economy at large. While the material consequence of war can be thought to be easily replenished, it leaves lasting scars on the fabric of society,” he said.
“Let not the failure of diplomacy be the reason millions of lives are uprooted and global shock waves felt throughout when the tools of creating international harmony are within our means,” he said.
Ethiopia expresses sincerest wishes for peace to prevail as all concerned parties explore peaceful alternatives to the current status quo, the PM added.
