Ethiopia has earned more than $48 million from electric energy export during the first half of the current Ethiopian fiscal year which began on July 8, 2022.
Public Relations Director of the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Moges Mekonnen on Thursday said 48.23 million was earned from electric power export to neighboring Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya over the last six months.
“$24.5 milion was earned from electric power export to Djibouti up by $1.7 million from what EEP had set to earn during the period.
According to the director, EEP has obtained $20.6 million and $3.09 million from sale of power export to Sudan and Kenya respectively.
Moges Mekonnen, Communication Director of EEP disclosed that the amount obtained from power export was in line with the country’s policy on green energy development and it contributes to the economic integration of the Horn of Africa.
Ethiopian Authorities announced a plan to increase the total earning from power export to $400 million with a plan to economically integrate the East African region through electricity in the coming ten years.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is expected to play a key role in the plan. The national flag project, with a capacity to generate up to 5,000MW, started generating electricity for the first time in February 2020.
