APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia has officially joined the BRICS economic alliance along with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, and Egypt.
The countries joined the bloc on Monday after receiving an initial invitation at the 2023 BRICS summit. Argentina was also invited but has since rejected it amidst a regime change.
Following the August event, Ethiopia welcomed the invitation to be part of the economic alliance.
Its membership recognizes the rich-multilateral contribution of Ethiopia to promote international peace, security, and prosperity, the Ethiopian foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The Government appointed the Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, Mamo Mihretu, as Sherpa and State Minister of Foreign Affairs Mesganu Arga, as Sous Sherpa.
A national ministerial and a senior official coordination committee have also been established.
These efforts “laid the groundwork to ensure the active participation of Ethiopia,” the ministry stated.
“Guided by its long-held principles and rich history of multilateraism, Ethiopia is committed and ready to play a constructive role in promoting peace and prosperity as a new member of the BRICS family in collaboration with all members,” the ministry said.
