Grenade attacks during pro government rallies in Ethiopia’s Amhara region on Thursday left one person dead and several others wounded, APA can report on Friday.
A resident in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region, told APA on condition of anonymity that “bomb attacks occurred in different parts of the city.”
The resident said bomb explosions in Dagamawi Menelik, Atse Tewodros, and Belay Zeleke sub-cities of Bahir Dar, left one individual, identified as an organizer of the rally, dead and several others injured.
Bomb explosions also occurred in Woldiya, a big town in north Wello zone during the rally, resulting in multiple injuries.
“The attacks took place in three areas early in the morning,” the resident said. “The first explosion occurred near the 1st Police Station, targeting the demonstrators. It seems intended to disrupt the protest.” The identities of those behind the attacks remain unknown, a resident of the town told APA by telephone.
The Amhara Regional State government on Thursday described the demonstrations as peaceful.
Arega Kebede, President of the Amhara Regional State said the peaceful demonstrations reflect the people’s desire for peace but acknowledged that there were attempts to disrupt them.
