The death toll from landslides in the Telemet district in Ethiopia’s Amhara region has reached 24, the district’s government communication office confirmed on Thursday.
When the disaster happened three days ago, only 10 people were killed and six others are still missing.
The office said four other districts have been affected by the landslides which caused the displacement of more than 2700 residents and destroyed 48 houses and crops on 1,775 hectares of land.
The government said it is coordinating emergency aid for those affected in the area.
Two other major landslides in southern Ethiopia occurred in July and earlier this month killing over 270 civilians. It happened in Gamo and Wolaita zones.
The landslides were caused by heavy rainfall the country received during the months of June and July – covering the rainy seasons in Ethiopia.
Flooding also affected many parts of the east African country.
Two districts in Silte districts have severely been affected since Wednesday, displacing over six thousand residents.
About 650 households are staying in a makeshift camp. However, the number of displaced households is much higher.
Ethiopia is in the middle of a very turbulent rainy season, which started in July and is expected to last until mid-September.
