Ethiopia has launched its first electronic passport (E-passport), featuring its iconic images and advanced security stores, the Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS) said Friday.
The E-passport includes biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper-proof materials, aligning with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
It features an embedded electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s personal details, including biometric data such as fingerprints.
Launching the new passport, Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie said the enhancements are aimed at preventing identity fraud, improving border security, and expediting verification processes at immigration checkpoints.
The new passport replaces the previous machine-readable (MRP) passport and is expected to reduce processing times for applicants.
Unlike its predecessor, which was produced by foreign companies, the new passport is manufactured in Ethiopia.
Officials have highlighted that local production is expected to reduce costs associated with foreign outsourcing, while also contributing to job creation in the printing and security technology sectors.
The design of the E-passport incorporates Ethiopian cultural and historical elements, replacing the previous design that was outsourced internationally.
The authorities noted that this transition gives Ethiopia greater control over passport issuance and strengthens national security by keeping production and personal data management within the country.
