APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia earned $21.4 million from electricity export during the first three months of 2023/24 fiscal year, the state-owned power producer says.
In the first quarter which ended last Friday, the company said it exported $21.4 million worth of electricity to the three neighboring countries namely Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan, EEP said Monday in a statement.
The revenue has shown an increase from the same months last year but was slightly less than the target, the EEP said on its first quarter performance.
Hydro power plants contributed 97.5 percent of the 4,760 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity generated in the three months as the remaining came from wind and geothermal (14.3 GWh) power plants.
Though production was not on target which was set at 5,526 GWh, the electricity generated in the first quarter still showed an 11% year on year increase, the EEP disclosed.
The announcement comes a day after Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa rebuffed a report alleging the recent drought hampered Ethiopia’s hydro-power generation and export capacity.
