Roadblocks set up by armed militants in parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia have disrupted transportation services since Tuesday, APA can report.
Residents living in the region’s east Gojjam and Wello zones told APA that transportation came to a standstill on 10 December 2024 following a directive issued by the armed forces also known as “Fano militants.”
“No vehicles have moved between towns for two days. There are no vehicles entering Debre Markos or leaving for other towns. Everyone is too afraid to move,” a resident told APA.
Gojjam Fano leader Zemene Kassie over the weekend announced about the imposition but did not specify when the transportation will end. He said the rebel force is also considering banning flights in and out of the region.
Additionally, shortages of supplies have been reported due to transportation disruptions caused by recurring security issues in the region.
Similarly, Abel Tesfaye, a resident of Dessie, told Addis Standard that roads from Dessie to Wurgessa and Wuchale are also blocked, citing ongoing security challenges.
Transportation across the Amhara Region has frequently been affected by clashes between government security forces and Fano militants.
Previously, Addis Standard reported that transportation activities in the Amhara Region had been suspended indefinitely starting 3 October 2024, following escalating violence, including heavy fighting between government forces and Fano militants.
