Ethiopia and Sudan Thursday agreed to settle their differences over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and border disputes through peaceful mechanisms.
The agreement was reached during a discussion between Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia Demeke Mekonnen and the President of Sudan’s Ruling Transitional Sovereign Council, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in Khartoum.
President Al Burhan also expressed his satisfaction over the signing of a peace deal between the Ethiopian Government and the TPLF and affirmed Sudan’s unwavering support for its full implementation.
Burhan underscored that Sudan will not tolerate and harbor any elements that attempt to derail the implementation of the accord or attack Ethiopia from the Sudanese territory, according to a statement from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two neighboring nations have agreed to settle border-related issues bilaterally through agreements signed before and existing mechanisms as resorting to force will not result in a durable solution.
Regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the two sides stated their conviction that the goodwill and cooperation between Sudan and Ethiopia will contribute to the attempt to address the differences in a trilateral manner.
Al-Burhan and Mekonnen have agreed to jointly prevent illegal human, arms, and drug trafficking in the border area.
They have also agreed to enhance corporations more than ever before on bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
An Ethiopian delegation led by Demeke Mekonnen has been attending the 48 IGAD meeting of Ministers in Khartoum, Sudan.
