Ethiopia’s Ministry of Peace has vowed that political and security officials who were fingered in displacements of individuals and rights violations will face be prosecuted.
While presenting nine-month performance report to the House of People’s Representatives (Parliament) on Tuesday, Minister of Peace, Muferiat Kamil, said the process has begun aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.
More than 1.3 million Ethiopians have been displaced since April last year following ethnic based clashes in which higher government officials were reportedly involved.
In her report, she briefed members of the parliament on works done to build peace, bring fair economic growth in regional states, institutional reform activities, and distribution of food and non-food assistance to displaced communities.
According to Muferiat, the government has distributed more than 1.74 million quintals of grains, with more than 60.3 percent of the spending covered by the government and the remaining 39.6 percent by donors.
More than 800,000 displaced people have also been repatriated to their villages voluntarily, she indicated.
In her report, the minister stated that shielding perpetrators from justice by regional states is the major challenge and police have so far detained only 50 percent of wanted members political leadership and security officials.
From now on, the federal government will use its power to bring the perpetrators to justice, she vowed.
