The report said the east African country reported 314 malaria-related deaths between May 1 and 26 across its Oromia, Amhara, Southwest and Southern regions.
Figures from the WHO showed that the number of malaria cases reported so far this year is far exceeding the number of cases reported during the same period in 2023 and is the highest in the past seven years.
It said the Oromia region reported the largest number of cases in an area called Wellega where access is a challenge because of ongoing security challenges.
It said health sector partners have continued to support the government with last-mile delivery of life-saving malaria supplies and training.
However, it added that a shortage in rapid diagnostics tests to detect malaria was reported, particularly in remote areas and areas with difficult access.
The ministry noted that Ethiopia’s ongoing main rainy season will further exacerbate the spread of the disease and called for urgent awareness and prevention efforts.
