Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed has vowed to end the conflict raging in the Tigray region for the past 23 months.
Speaking at an outdoor event in Oromia State on Thursday, PM Ahmed said peace will return to the war-torn region within the shortest possible time.
”We will not continue fighting forever. I believe that in a short period of time, we will stand with our Tigrayan brothers for peace and development,” he added.
His government recently accepted an African Union-led effort to broker a truce and negotiate a definitive end to the conflict which has killed thousands of people, mostly civilians and displaced up to one million more.
Peace talks with representatives of the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front are scheduled for 24 October in South Africa.
